GSoC #45
I almost feel like laughing now. Two days of good health and I fall ill again. :/
Anyways, I made progress on fixing oil and hope to complete it in a day or two depending on how fast I recover.

GSoC #43
I am working on fixing faults. The part that deals with displaying hanging wall is done, working on fixing footwall now.

GSoC #42
My illness is back again. -_- Kudos to Kasturba Mess for ensuring that they procure the shittiest raw materials from the market. It can get a little difficult to work when you are running off to the washbasin to vomit what you ate an hour back.
Anyways, I am starting on where I left my work with faults on Saturday. I got very little work done on Sunday, but I cleared the major problems of representing rocks I had faced.

GSoC #41
I was very ill this week, which is why you haven't seen blog posts for the last few days.
I am fixing the mistakes with faults today. I hope to complete it by tomorrow.

GSoC #39
I am almost done with pipes. If all goes as expected, I should be posting screenshots tomorrow.

GSoC #38
I am finally back to my college and done(really?) with shifting. Anyways, I made some progress on pipes and hope to finish it by this weekend and start on faults too.
Tuesday, 15 July 2014
GSoC #37
Not yet done with pipes. Still debugging. I would be travelling back to college on 16th so work would be a little off-limit.
Monday, 14 July 2014
GSoC #36
I am almost done correcting my implementation of pipes. I would be posting some screenshots soon. :)

GSoC #35
This is for the work done on 11th and 12th July. Not a lot of work was done, although more than what I expected. As I started correcting the mistakes I keep on realizing that my implementation had been so rudimentary.

GSoC #34
This is for work done on 10 July 2014. I started correcting the mistakes I made in implementing pipes and faults.

GSoC #33
I noticed gaping holes in my code for pipes and faults. It seems what I did was not good at all. And it needs to be reimplemented in a better manner. I am planning to fix them over the next 3-4 days. :)

GSoC #32
Oh well, today was not a bad day. I managed to get closer to implementing oil. Should be done by tomorrow!( well, I am being hopeful )

GSoC #31
I was travelling a bit during the weekend and today I am sick. I started implementing solid pattern for oil.
Thursday, 3 July 2014
GSoC #30
So, I wanted to have liquids displayed as animated images, but that is a little difficult and I don't see this as something very important. So, we have decided to go ahead with solid patterns.

GSoC #29
I got started on implementing display of liquids in the subsurface. To make them look more liquidy, it would make sense to have it a little animated.

GSoC #28
I am still not being able to properly figure out how to display liquids like oil in the subsurface.

GSoC #26
I am so excited today!
Why would anyone want to look in the subsurface until they want to find oil and gas?
I was first thinking of trying to show the fluid nature of oil but realized it is not really necessary. A different colour code/pattern should do. Same goes with gas.

I couldn't get much work done during the weekend. Was too tired. I shall post more updates tonight.

GSoC #23
Yay! I mentioned in my previous post that I was stuck with extracting point positions from shapefiles. Well, I was looking for the solution at wrong places. I was directed to a WorldWind class by my mentor which would do the work for me.
Guess, I should ask for help more often.

GSoC #22
I am trying to make more sense of the shapefiles, trying to extract latitude and longitude of points from them. Till now, I haven't found a solution that suits my needs. There are solutions where you can manually get the position data but nothing that can be done automatically.

GSoC #21
Argh! I figured out how to draw lines for the fault. I also figured out some mistakes in the way I was approaching display of subsurface pipes.
Tuesday, 17 June 2014
GSoC #20
I am stuck at making my code for displaying subsurface pipes run properly.
Anyway, the only good thing about last two days was that I made a slight progress on faults. I am slightly doubtful about how to go about displaying rocks.
(This is for 16th, 17th June 2014)

GSoC #19
I did not realize that I had not added a way to load zipped data. Today I added methods to load zipped data and use it.

GSoC #17
So, the world cup started. :D
I dropped the idea of working on folds since it is not an important issue. Most relevant folds are above the surface. What matters most below the surface is faults! How else would you have earthquakes?!
So, right now I am working on faults!

GSoC #16
This is the post for the work I did on 9th and 10th. Maybe. I seem to have lost my sense of dates.
So, I was trying to figure out what is wrong with my code for subsurface pipes! And lo behold, I didn't add DetailHint, which is important for showing tiled image layers.
Today is 11th, 2:30 am. I just got data! Now, I will test my code with the data I have received.

GSoC #15
I think I have an improved version of how I implement folds but I have no data to test anything. I will have another attempt at fake data.
Friday, 6 June 2014
GSoC #14
I don't have data yet and neither have I made much progress on folds implementation. But I have already figured out how to implement faults. I hope to get more progress during the weekend.

GSoC #13
Ouch, I forgot to write a blog yesterday. Instead of blaming it on my poor memory and drowsy state I will blame the number 13. ( Bad joke! )
So, yesterday I was just trying to figure out how to implement the folds and I have been told that I will have data for subsurface pipes soon, so it is going to be a test of how bad or good my code is!

GSoC #12
I forgot to write this post last night.
I have started implementing the folds feature about which I was talking in the previous post.
It isn't as straightforward as I thought as I am still noobish with respect to World Wind API.

GSoC #11
Right now, I am trying to figure out how to display folds in an area.
I am taking a rather simplistic approach. I consider the fold to be completely symmetric. So if I have the lateral extent of the fold and the inclination of the arms of the fold, I am good to go. :)

GSoC #10
Today I got started on a data generation script. It took me some time to understand the format, but I think I now understand it well enough to try it out myself. I don't know if my program for rocks and pipes will work or not!

GSoC #9
Today I was reading up on GDAL, going through their documentation and tutorials to use them. I am waiting for some data so that I can test my rocks and pipes display. GDAL is a translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. It presents a single raster abstract data model and vecotr abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats.
(I forgot to click the publish button last night. :P This is yesterday's post, not today's.)

GSoC #8
Not much success with rocks yet.
Edits: I have figured out how to model rocks which have equal axes. Right now the problem is to change the axis, radius and orientation at the same time.

GSoC #7
Phew, I am much better now. Today I was trying to display different rock types in the subsurface, but I haven't had actual success yet. I am treating rocks as cylindrical bodies and then altering the properties of the cylinder to represent different rocks. As of now different means two.
Signing off for the day!

GSoC #6
I am still sick but I managed to move forward with understanding the previously written code but my code has started facing trouble with classpath( ). I am in no mood to further debug due to my heavy head( sorry, Adele :P ).

GSoC #4
I am trying to lay my hands on test dataset.
Since the work done by other people was long ago, it is less work to just redo it by yourself.
So, that's what I will do from tomorrow.

GSoC #3
This is one of those moments when you are thankful you averted a big mistake early.
It had slipped my mind that I am supposed to build up on what has already been done.
And I was trying to reinvent the wheel for two days. Sigh! But I learnt something, at least and I am glad I caught my blunder on time.
WW_subsurface is the work done in previous years. I had used a few examples from this but had never set it up fully. I was doing that today. Turns out that I haven't succeeded completely. I ran a few files individually but I need to set up this project again.

GSoC #2
I am trying to figure out a way to visualize the subsurface. I know how to look INTO the subsurface but right now I am stuck at this point.
I am already yawning. Hoping to make better progress tomorrow.

GSoC Day 1
The first in the many to come. :D
Pardon the randomness, if any.
This summer my project is titled "Display of subsurface features in a virtual world".
I shall be using the World Wind SDK by NASA for my work.
I am already done with setting things up and managed to run the most basic features necessary, i.e., how to fiddle with transparency.
Tools: Eclipse IDE
Language: Java

The Fog
The fog refuses to go away,
The sun can’t find its way,
The sun isn't mine,
The fog isn't mine either
But has found its way into my soul.
The sun is knocking,
On the doors of my heart,
Ouch, fog and sun are fighting,
Hurting and knocking down my heart.
See! fog is waning,
Sun is winning,
But it hurts me,
Yet, I just watch while they hurt me,
Yes, I will just watch.
The hurt is nice,
Like the bitterest elixir,
Spreads through me,
Altering me, Controlling me.
One little push,
And the sun will win,
And the fog is grumpily retreating,
Now, yes, now the sun is in.
Is my heart too small,
For you, oh sun?
Can you not just fit in there?
Oh yes, you are just sitting in there.
Uncomfortably, but waiting.
Will you just hang in there,
Oh I see, your heat expands my heart,
I see your trouble
Some day, it would be me in you.
A heart in the sun,
Not a sun in the heart.
